Be careful what you wish for, cause you just might get it (in a very twisted way) :O
For as long as I remember, I’ve always wanted to go overseas. THERE. That was one of my wishes and dreams. I knew my dreams would one day come true but never had I imagined it this way. Going overseas to study MEDICINE??! (In my teen years, medicine = I’d never do it!) Cause the picture I had in mind was roaming around the globe just for the heck of it. And BAMM!! I’m now pursuing medicine in Russia. It’s my day two here at Kursk State Medical University and I’m typing this for my blog as I am accompanied by the loud snoring from the next bed. (Snorer’s Identity shall not be exposed. And by the way, is “snorer” even a proper word?) Okay, let me start my story in order. (Get prepared, it’s a damn long story)
24th Feb 2011. My Last Day In Malaysia.
This was the day I was going away so far from my family for the FIRST time. Halfway across the world! (Wait, I don’t really know if its halfway across the world :P ) Leaving behind my family, friends, home, my comfort zone and well practically everything I knew in my last 18 years, was NOT an easy thing to do. The reality of me leaving did not hit me till this very day. When my dad woke me up with a kiss on the cheek and asked what I’d like for breakfast as he does every time he’s home, I started thinking: crap! This the last time I’d have that till I come back for summer break. I held back that urge of crying by just going back to sleep. A few seconds later, I get a text from a dear friend of mine, and BAMM! That started the waterworks. :( Because that was reality hitting me hard in my face. ITS MY LAST DAY IN MALAYSIA! So, the day was quite hectic as I had a lot of last minute preparation to do. My timing is out. WELL DUH! I’M AN INDIAN. WHAT DO YOU EXPECT? :( Bought my winter clothing only on the day before leaving. And after that had to rush to PJ, but it wasn’t my fault that Maggaram the agency people made us take the documentations out of the sudden. Then came back home and parents helped me pack my luggage that I was “packing” the entire week before. Haha. Later during the night, I had a few people coming over for the final goodbye. My darling best buddies Hema and Vanessa came over to my house for a so called ten-minute-only-visit, which definitely lasted longer. (Hema’s dad waiting out in the car for them the whole time) it was crazy as they had so lil time and the surprise movie they made me could not be copied to the CD and I was making them tell me the ‘behind the scenes’ story of that movie. With all that going on, we still had time for some random insanity. We decided to call up a friend of mine who did not contribute a video for the movie and Vanessa entered “interrogation” mode. Haha. Sorry about that, Narandra! And after they left, I had aunties, uncles and cousins come over. Me and my cousin Enbah were talking and got ourselves laughing like MAD COWS. Enbah’s family left around two am but my other cousin Kumar and his parents stayed over cause they’ll be sending me to the airport in the morning. I had about one hour of sleep that night.
25th Feb 2011 : My Departure
Before leaving, i prayed and got blessings from parents, uncle and aunt and two kisses on my cheeks from my grandmother. ewww. The journey to KLIA was slightly nerve wrecking as time ticked away fast and I was freaking out on the phone to Hema “I can’t believe I’m really going!!”. Then at the airport, I saw the whole jingbang from Nirwana waiting with their families for the check in counter to open and to cry out their final goodbyes. At the check in counter, we had a little “blonde-moment” and thought that my luggage was over the allowed weight limit, 40kg. So had to take out some things and my big box of earrings and bracelets was my mom’s first target. :( But then turns out my luggage did not exceed the limit in the first place and so those earrings made it to Russia. Weeeeeeeeee.. After a while it was time to go, through the customs and to the plane. After the slightly emotional goodbye hugs and kisses from family, I followed Sadiq, my friend from college, to get to our plane. It’s my first time being into this inside part of the airport and all, so I was pretty clueless on what to do and where to go. But why fear when Sadiq is here. Haha. I followed him everywhere like a puppy. :) Although it’s my first time flying, I was not scared about it, it was actually quite nice. The view outside, the food, the cute STEWARDS, and all the new movies that I could watch, made the 12hours plus journey quite bearable, except for the part where there’s altitude changes, THAT really screwed up my ears. Then once in Moscow, at the Domodedovo Airport, we had our seniors guiding us to the bus to Kursk. The first moment we were outside, I started coughing my internal organs out. IT WAS SO BLOODY COLD! That moment I knew what it felt to be a vampire, being the “Cold One” . But too bad I’m not a real vampire (yet) so I’m not immortal and the -13 degrees almost had me dying. The 8 hours bus ride to Kursk was pure agony for my non existing butt. We were given McDonalds’ burgers and wow, I gotta say, eating ice cold burger in the freaking cold weather did wonders to my digestive system. Once we reached the hostel, we were assigned into rooms. We got to choose our roommates but we were told to pick people from the same race as it would be easier in terms of beliefs and such. Just like what was planned earlier, Abi and I became roommates. Our hostel warden, Mama Veera showed us our rooms and we were lucky to get the recently renovated rooms. Had new wallpapers and such. The common kitchen is crappy looking and the separate toilet and bathroom is miserable! The toilets don’t have that hole for dirty water to flow. Why?? Cause there’s NO TAP at all! Just a toilet bowl, and that’s all there is. Little did I know that people here don’t wash their ass. Here it’s the “ass wipe” scenario. You use tissue. That’s just insanely gross! So we students have to walk over to the bathroom to get cleaned up. That’s just sick! And oh! As disgusting this may be, but it’s the whole truth, I did not shower the first two days upon arrival. On my defence, it was freezing cold okay?! So anyway, it was already way past midnight when we arrived here, and we were all hyped up about being here, and so most of us just stayed awake the whole day and just got ready to for the next day. So I practically had no sleep for about 24hours plus (didn’t sleep properly in Malaysia and on the flight, but passed out for a bit in the bus though).

26th Feb: Day one.
On the first day, all three meals were prepared for us by the seniors, but we had to pay for it though. 300 roubles, which is equivalent to rm30. The spaghetti for breakfast was so damn oily instead of being saucy. But beggars can’t be choosers, so we just ate it anyway. Then we changed our USD into roubles. It was freaky cause it seemed like a syndicate thing cause we changed the money in the car on the street behind the hostel. But it’s nothing, it’s all legal, this guy in the car somehow gave a higher exchange rate compared to the rest of the places. Why? I HAVE NO IDEA. Later on we went to shop for comforters at this Russian market sort of place. Like pasar pagi. Lunch came back to Padfak, our hostel. We ate….. Hmm.. lunch. What was for lunch? Okay I don’t remember. Screw it. After lunch, SHOPPING!!! Went to Evropa (something like Jusco), bought food stuff. Then went to the mall, Central Renak bought winter items. Got my winter boots, 4000roubles! Crazy. But i desperately needed to keep my feet warm. (but actually its just a lame excuse fo me to get nice shoes. hehe) Night had chicken curry with rice. Abi and I were too lazy to eat up in our room so just ate at the ground floor in front of seniors. Akward! That’s when one of our seniors, Ruben.P ane, asked me and Abi if we were sister! We’re like WTH. We don’t look alike, lol.

showing off our boots. btw, we dont look alike, do we?
27th Feb: Day Two
MORE SHOPPING!! Shopping for necessities with assigned seniors. Abi, Mukesh, Kevin, Mohan and I were in Anesh ane and Ruben.P ane’s group. We bought stuff for the room. Broom, mop, pails, hangers and water filters (the water here is highly calcified). Apart from that we bought more winter items like gloves, scarf and that monkey cap thing. It was funny cause we didn’t know Russian and the Russians didn’t know English. If it wasn’t for the senior anes we would have been screwed. Lunch we had to make by ourselves today, we heated up the ikan bilis sambal that Mohan’s mom prepared from Malaysia, seal packed and all. Dinner also seal packed food. Shopping was pretty much the only thing we did on day two. But let’s not forget the part we all froze to death when walking in the cold.

28th Feb: Day Three. The seniors!
Today was all about the Visa and Immigration Registration at the Uni. We also had academic registration at office for Department Of International Relations. I was in the third group of 15 with Mukesh. Our assigned senior for the day was Prashanth ane, the one who CLAIMS to be one sixth ITALIAN! . *slaps forehead*. We were taken to the bank to pay for some stuff. I didn’t really bother about what it was, just knew everyone had to pay for it. It was in the bank where Mukesh and I started talking the ane, and from there the stories kept coming. That ane started calling me “indon” cause he claims that the “dewi” in my name is spelt like how the Indonesians do it. Then we were talking and he was in such disbelieve to find out that I don’t eat dhal curry. Soon after , we all went to Antalia for lunch and we ate ‘pide’. It was pretty good. Prasanth ane introduced me to Nithraj ane (the quiet one) as the girl who is too ‘English’ to eat dhal. So it’s not suprising that they started bullying this poor soul. :/ They’re pretty funny, so it’s all good. Oh oh! How can I forget SWEET AKKA! Its our Chinese senior named Swit. She’s such a cutie! :) She’s the one who told me to get tumblr instead of blogspot for my blog, and she asked if I wanted to take dance lessons with her friend. Belly dancing and Jazz! Should i? haha. During the registration we met Madam Natalia, she’s something like the vice dean (atleast that’s what Mukesh told me). She had a unique accent. :) It was a long day and I pretty much spent the entire day talking to the seniors. They’re nice. :) Oh oh! One of the days,( I can’t remember which day), Abi, Mukesh, Kevin, Mohan and I went for lunch with Swit akka, Ruben.P ane and Anish ane. Yeah. Hmmm I can think of more senior stories, but I’m way too lazy to type it all out. So, moving on!

1st March: day 4? Yeah four. (I think)
HIV TEST!!!! I was freaked out to the core of my poor soul. I can’t handle needles, especially when it’s taking out blood. The waterworks will start automatically once the doctor holds the needle. But miracles do happen!! Don’t know which god blessed me with guts this time. (I was actually going to use another word for “guts” but that’s probably too vulgar and I’ll get in trouble when my family reads this). Anyway, Sathis ane, (introduced to me by Prasanth ane just that very morning) told stories about how the doctor once left the needle hanging halfway while still taking the blood. I died of fear. But I knew I can’t avoid this like how I did in Malaysia, so I manned up and went in. and BOOM BABY! I was fine the whole time, no tears!! Aku bangga gila! Haha. After the HIV test, there was nothing else in store for us. So went back to hostel and made an appointment with my bed. :) PASSED OUT FOR HOURS!!
On the 3rd march we had our chemistry entrance exam. It was quite okay actually, although I got Variant 4, the harder Variant compared to the rest. But only god knows if I would pass. FINGERS CROSSED!! :) After the exam, went to Evropa to get food stuff. I finally got to full fill my chocolate craving! Choc here is so much cheaper than in Malaysia. I was in wonderland as I walked back to hostel with my Snickers, Kinder Bueno and the KING SIZED Kit Kat. :) Later on, my attempt to make Sardine went down the drain cause it tasted like crap. Thanks to me. The Padfak master chef!! :( But just my luck, I coincidently ran into the god-sent Dashvinder, my fellow Perimbun High School senior, who helped me out with the sardine. Abi, Mukesh and I had such happy bellies that day. And it only got better! Because, Dash (surprised that I can’t cook) offered to make me pork for dinner. Obviously, there’s no way I’d turn down pork, especially when I have been eating simple and very dry food the past few days. I would KILL for something gravy! Dash had some errands to do suddenly, so while I was dead asleep, he came by my room and told Abi that dinner would be delayed for a bit. But at the end of the day, he held on to his words and well, my tummy was filled with kicap pork! It was SO GOOD! While he made the dish, I was hanging around the common kitchen and I met Kamini akka (for the first time), Sachdeve and Shan. Dash and I had a long chat over dinner and he was telling me about the things I should get, like colour pencils, sketch book, lab coat and yaada yaada yaada. School stories and stuff. It was pleasantly different to talk to him because he was so relaxed and calm, unlike most of my other dramatic-overly hyper-loud friends (like me). Haha. Full belly, warm room, and all I could do was fall asleep. But I wasn’t done with my biology revision as there was bio entrance exam the next morning! So I set like a million alarms and snoozed for a bit. Only to find myself waking up to OFF THE ALARMS AND GO BACK TO SLEEP! Lol. But guilty conscious took over me and I couldn’t sleep any longer. Woke up around 7am and started studying. Managed to finish studying everything in time. :) yay! So bio exam was way better than Chemi but once again, only god knows how my results would be. :/ after that no agenda. So I was with my new best friend since 2pm till now. (its way past midnight now) who’s my new bestie?? No no. WHAT’S my new bestie would be the proper way to say it. Yes! I’m talking about my lappy! Heeeeee… :) skyped my very pretty friend Jasmine Cheema, was on msn with a few other beloved idiots back in Malaysia and FINALLY GOT THE CHANCE TO SKYPE MY FAMILY!! Mom, bro, cousins, pretty much the entire jing bang! :) So this is pretty much what has happened so far the past week or so.
(And to the overly concern family back at home, stop wondering If I’m drinking or smoking or doing anything immoral, I’ve been raised way too well to be doing anything stupid like that. Once you hear my “way-too-personal-to-be-in-blogs” stories, you’ll think I’m a saint! No joke!)

Anyway, on the 6th march, my brother from another mother, Kumar, is going to get married. And tragically I’m stuck at another corner of the world, so I’ll be missing one of the biggest hoo-haa events in my family. Yet again, I do have my flight return ticket back to home. So I was wondering, what’s the worst that could happen if I flew back home for the wedding?? Then the image of my angry parents came across my mind and I put those sweet lil dreams to bed. There’s no way I could be at the wedding. Sigh. Can you hear that sound? What sound?? The sound of my heart breaking!! :( *fake tears* haha. Well ane, I will not physically be at the wedding but I’ll be there in spirit! My love to you and your lovely bride to be. :)
And to the rest of the family, I HEREBY GRANT YOU ALL MY PERMISSION TO PARTY WITHOUT ME. Mom, bring down the dance floor on my behalf okay?
As I was typing this, I found it quite hard to believe how my life took a 180degrees turn. It feels like just yesterday I was chilling with my cousins, texting my best friends every minute, watching TV all day long and had nothing to worry about because my Appi and mom took care of everything. In a blink of an eye, I’m in a plane, flying alone, arriving in a cold foreign land, and then traversing the Russian countryside, embarking on a completely new journey.
It’s an adventure and I’m so ready to face any challenge this alien land has in store for me.
Bring. It. On.
HELL YEAH!!!
If you made it till the end of the story, thanks for reading! Here are more pictures to tell the rest of the tale :
